Get to Know Rappahannock Cellars
Rappahannock Cellars was founded by the Delmare family, who moved from California to Virginia in 1998 with a bold vision — to craft world-class wines on the East Coast. What began as a historic farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is now a thriving, family-run winery led by sisters Teresa and Kelly Knight.
Guided by a deep respect for both tradition and innovation, the team blends Old World winemaking techniques with the distinctive Virginia terroir. Every vine is hand-tended, every grape carefully selected, and every bottle tells a story of land, legacy, and craftsmanship.
At its heart, Rappahannock Cellars is more than a winery — it’s a living expression of sustainability and stewardship, where the love of wine is rooted in care for the soil, the water, and the generations to come.

Mission & Values
Cultivate excellence. Protect the land. Celebrate Virginia.
Rappahannock Cellars’ mission is to grow exceptional estate grapes through sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. Every farming decision — from soil enrichment to water conservation — supports a balanced ecosystem and produces fruit that authentically expresses the region.
Sustainability in Action
- 100% solar-powered winery
- Integrated pest management with natural predators
- Precision drip irrigation and water conservation
- Minimal intervention to preserve vineyard health
- Zero-waste winemaking philosophy
“Our goal is simple: to farm responsibly, craft thoughtfully, and share wines that honor this land we love.”
— Kelly Knight, Owner
Philosophy
At Rappahannock Cellars, farming is not just about yield — it’s about harmony. Great wine begins in the vineyard, and every choice in the field impacts the final flavor in the glass. The team’s focus on soil vitality, biodiversity, and gentle vine care allows the natural character of Virginia’s terroir to shine.
Even grapes that don’t look perfect are never wasted; they find new purpose in blends that add complexity and depth to the wine. It’s a no-waste mindset that reflects both artistry and accountability.
The Grapes of Rappahannock
While Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay are perennial favorites, Rappahannock Cellars also champions Virginia’s resilient hybrid grapes — Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin, and Norton. These varietals thrive in the local climate, producing bright, expressive wines that embody the spirit and strength of Virginia viticulture.
“Our hybrids are the quiet backbone of the vineyard — hearty, beautiful, and full of personality.”
— Kelly Knight, Owner
The Vineyard Through the Seasons
Spring: Bud break and early pruning set the tone for the year ahead.
Summer: Long days of canopy management and irrigation balance sun and shade.
Fall: The harvest — where patience, timing, and teamwork come together.
Winter: A season of rest and renewal. Vines are pruned and prepared for new growth while the roots strengthen below the frozen soil.
Even when the vines sleep, the vineyard never stops working. Each dormant season shapes the health of the next harvest.

“There’s something magical about seeing someone taste our wine and realize — this is Virginia.” — Kelly Knight, Owner
The Heart of the Work
For Kelly Knight, the most rewarding part of being a farmer and vintner is the connection — to the land, to the process, and to the people who share in the experience.
“Every small decision in the vineyard, every careful step in winemaking, contributes to the bigger picture. We’re not just making wine; we’re building something lasting — a story in every bottle.”
Final Thoughts
Rappahannock Cellars embodies the essence of Root to Table’s mission — strengthening local food systems through craftsmanship, connection, and care for the land.
Every pour celebrates a partnership between people and place, honoring the soil of Virginia and the community it sustains.
“At Rappahannock Cellars, we don’t just grow grapes. We grow connections — between the land, the wine, and the people who love both.”
