Rooted Stories shares the people, places, and passions behind our regional food community. In this feature, Adriana Lucca and Chef Alan from Barrel Oak Winery & Brewery discuss the inspiration behind The Summer Table Rooted at Barrel Oak and the role local food and wine play in creating memorable experiences.
What inspired The Summer Table experience?
The Summer Table was inspired by the simple beauty of gathering around good food, local wine, and the season at its peak. We wanted to create something that felt relaxed, abundant, and rooted in place; less formal dinner, more elevated summer gathering in the vines.
What makes this event different is the focus on local sourcing and shared experience. It brings together Virginia wine, seasonal ingredients, and the people behind them in a way that feels very connected to the land and community.
Chef Alan, what is it like working with local farms to develop a menu?
Working with local farms makes the menu feel alive. Instead of starting with a fixed idea and forcing ingredients into it, we get to build around what is fresh, seasonal, and at its best. For this dinner, sourcing from farms like Horsefields and Hidden Creek gives us the opportunity to highlight ingredients with a real story behind them. It makes the food more meaningful because guests are not just enjoying a meal they are tasting the region.
How does planning a winery dining experience differ from a traditional restaurant setting?
At the winery, the menu always has to complement the setting, the wine, and the feeling of the experience. We think about what guests are drinking, how they are moving through the space, and how the food can bring people together.
It’s about more than creating a beautiful dish, it’s about inviting guests to slow down, try local ingredients, and enjoy a thoughtful meal that feels intentional, not mass produced. It’s sharing a table with strangers and walking away at the end of the evening with new friendships, a happy belly, and that renewed feeling that comes from being outside, surrounded by the vines, experiencing a truly magical night.
What can guests look forward to at Barrel Oak this summer?
Summer at Barrel Oak is all about golden hour, vineyard views, and easy wine country energy. Guests can look forward to Rosé season, award-winning Virginia wines, craft beer releases, seasonal bites, live music, Sunset Sessions on Friday evenings, and relaxed weekends made for lingering.
We are also continuing to elevate our experiences, from cellar tours and wine club events to cottage stays and special dinners that showcase the best of Virginia wine country.
